The Voice App

Emmy nominated, The Voice App was designed to become one of the most engaging live applications and must have fan companions. From its inception, my teams worked closely with our programming teams to design and develop unique application that would evolve with the series.

With billions of interactions each week, The Voice App quickly became an industry benchmark that drove tune-in and engagement each week through live voting, coach interactions, contestant videos & journeys, and large scale partner/sponsor opportunities.

PRODUCT GOALS
The live voting mechanism is one of the most engaging features of The Voice App. Prior to the development of the Official App as a voting mechanism, audiences had to rely solely on web, phone and text methods. We had 3 key goals and KPI's for the new product.

  • Increase audience voting via the app.

  • Keep audiences engaged both during and after the show

  • Design a simple, intuitive, and fun experience.

HABIT FORMING FEATURES

The Voice App puts the power of the show into the palm of your hand - influencing the outcome of the each night. Fans can engage before the show by tweeting with the coaches. Users provide direct sentiment for performances, build their own teams, participate in the Instant Saves, and challenge each other during shared experiences.

OUTCOMES & RESULTS

The impact of the app was a phenomenal success. Within the first season, our audience votes skyrocketed to over 50 Million. Over the course of 10 seasons, the application became a benchmark for how the network series would evolve to be more fan engaged.

  • Voting increased over 550%

  • 90% of all votes cast through the mobile app

  • 2.5+ MM downloads in the first Season

  • 5.25+ MM growth per/season

  • Over 40M downloads to date

This application was one of my favorite experiences as a Product and Design leader. It was a testament of true iteration and improvements that would be rolled out each season to constantly evolve, innovate and enhance the experience for customers, audiences and fans alike. In addition to the mobile companion app, we developed a live, real-time voting experience for Amazon Alexa’s and Comcast X1 boxes.

The America's Got Talent

Building on the success of The Voice App, our teams developed the Official America's Got Talent App during the 9th Season of the show. It is always a challenge to deliver a product that creates new opportunities and audiences for a mature series. Our task was to use the success of The Voice App to create an engaging and delightful experience that captured key moments for audience engagement with the live shows. My product and design teams focused on the light-hearted moments of inspiration and aspiration to create an emotional connection to the live broadcast.

HABIT FORMING FEATURES

The AGT App included interstitials, quizzes and live visualizations to create an intuitive and engaging experience while watching the show. In addition to voting, the app allowed audiences to play along using a positive/negative sentiments, tweet directly to the judges, and create custom buzzer sounds to compete with friends and family members.

OUTCOMES & RESULTS

The AGT App exponentially out-paced The Voice App - rocketing to past 750,000 downloads in the first 2 weeks of its release. Throughout its first three seasons, its audience size was well over 10 million users.

  • In-app interactions increased over 750%

  • 95% of live votes are cast through the app.

  • 2.5+ MM downloads in the first Season

  • 5.0+ MM growth per/season

Much like its predecessor, we continued to iterate and evolve the app every season with unique features that coincided with the Live On-Air broadcasts. The Official AGT App continues to set an extremely high bar for live engagement apps.
